Superintendent's Blue Devil Blog: 10/15/21
Hello, Blue Devils! I am trying something new this year on Fridays. I will be giving you some insight into the Superintendent's job, my personal Blue Devil experience, and end with a Covid-19 update.
MAINTENANCE MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen on the hiring process for open positions. Working on incentives to hire more people.
TRANSPORTATION INTERVIEWS - The transportation director hiring committee spent the morning interviewing more candidates.
INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY MEETING - Met with Kristina Berger on updates for our communication policy, social media protocols, and Responsible Use Policy (RUP) sign-offs. We need all sign-offs from parents completed as soon as possible in order to allow for internet access. Unfortunately, to stay compliant we must turn off access until parents sign the RUP's which were given at the beginning of the school year.
CORVALLIS SCHOOLS FOUNDATION MEETING - Once a month the foundation meets to discuss grants, fundraising, and other official business to support the 501c3 organization. The connection and support from the foundation and other donors are extremely important to the district. They impact student learning every day! We are very appreciative.
SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MEETING - Met with a board member in getting ready for the Tuesday and Wednesday school board meetings.
JV FOOTBALL VS. EAST HELENA - Having been a past athletic director, I have let our administration team know that I will fill in a couple of nights for them to give them a night off. This night the Corvallis boys lost by only a few points, but it was an exciting game with a chance to win down to the last play.
TRANSPORTATION MEETING - Met with Katie Gividen who has been supporting the transportation department on a couple of bus concerns. She has been fantastic to work with and we have been able to get a lot of situations solved. I want to commend her hard work!
CABINET MEMBER MEETING - Once a month I meet with the entire cabinet team (Administrators, Directors, and Supervisors) to talk about district goals, upcoming events, and more.
SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MEETING - Met another school board member in getting information ready for the upcoming board meeting.
CURRICULUM DIRECTOR MEETING - Met with Allison Nys on state reporting for OPI.
TRANSPORTATION MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen to discuss working on buses, scheduling them in for maintenance and repairs, and making sure everything is covered.
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING - 6:00 PM work session dealt with facilities planning. Discussion on last month's presentation from SMA on possibilities for building projects. The regular board meeting started at 7:00 PM and minutes will be posted after they are ratified at the next board meeting in November. We encourage you to not only participate but to get engaged by coming to our board meetings.
FINGERPRINTING - Fingerprinted a new employee and started the paperwork in getting a new employee hired. Lyndi Henson, district secretary, is in charge of our background check process.
BITTERROOT SUPERINTENDENT'S MEETING - Traveled to Florence for the monthly meeting of Bitterroot superintendents. All seven superintendents met to discuss current issues, hear from Montana CSPD representative, Kirk Miller from School Administrators of Montana, and more. This short time together is time well spent to team with local school districts.
TRANSPORTATION MEETING - Met with Katie to discuss transportation.
CURRICULUM MEETING - Met with the curriculum director for the upcoming Nov. 5th PIR day with staff and administration, upcoming safety meeting agenda, and reviewed our professional development plan connected to our District Leadership Team.
BOARD MEMBER MEETING - I met with a board member in getting ready for the special board meeting.
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING: NEGOTIATIONS WITH CFG - 7:00 PM supported negotiations between the school board and Corvallis Faculty Group regarding COVID leave and working from home in special circumstances.
SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MEETING - Met with a board member on many items.
DISTRICT SAFETY MEETING - Quarterly the district safety team meets to discuss progress on school safety. We are currently planning a district-wide safety exercise with adults on Nov. 5. Representatives from each school, several departments, and the sheriff's office partake in these meetings. We are appreciative of this connection.
SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MEETING - Met with a board member on a curriculum question.
RAVALLI COUNTY HEALTH NURSE CONTACT - Met with Tiffany Webber, Ravalli County Health Nurse, on the current status of COVID in our school district.
HIGH SCHOOL MEETING - Met with a high school principal, observed classrooms, and worked on goals.
PARENT MEETING - Met with a parent over a concern.
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING: BUSINESS MANAGER/CLERK INTERVIEWS - Reviewed applications, conducted interviews, and made a decision on a recommendation to the full board.
SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MEETING - Met with a board member on a situation.
BUSINESS DEPARTMENT MEETINGS - Met with Lyndi and Heather today on business department questions and possible new personnel.
SPECIAL SERVICES MEETING - Met with Dan Carrasco on several items pertaining to special services.
CSCT CANDIDATE MEETING - Met with a possible candidate for our CSCT openings in our district. Comprehensive and School Community Treatment has been lacking to find therapists across the state of Montana.
TEACHER MEETING - Met with a teacher to discuss several items.
SPECIAL SERVICES MEETING - Met again with Dan Carrasco on several items, including funding ideas to meet our OPI required Maintenance of Effort.
PARENT MEETING - Met with a parent on a concern.
COVID UPDATE: 10/15/21

Our next regularly scheduled school board meeting will be on November 9th. We will start with a special session at 6:00 PM, and the regular board meeting starting at 7:00 PM in the library.
