Superintendent's Blue Devil Blog: 1/14/22

Hello, Blue Devils! I am trying something new this year on Fridays. I will be giving you some insight into the Superintendent's job, my personal Blue Devil experience, and end with a Covid-19 update.

MEETING WITH A STAFF MEMBER – Continued work on certification questions for an employee. Every employee must be certified and working in their area of certification. There are a few flexibilities, but accreditation standards created by the Office of Public Instruction are enforced statewide.

MEETING WITH CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTIONAL TECH DIRECTORS – Met with Allison Nys and Kristina Berger on upcoming board presentation on Goal Focus Area #2 of the Strategic plan: Community Engagement and Support. Reviewed all materials and presentation. 

MET WITH SPECIAL SERVICES DIRECTOR – Met with Dan Carrasco on several topics pertaining student support and reviewing district issues of concern.  

MET WITH MAINTENANCE DIRECTOR – Met with Jim Bowen on current and upcoming projects. Working on heating in a couple buildings.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING – Regular board meeting was moved to Monday due to sports on Tuesdays for a couple trustees. We will moving next months meeting to February 15th.

SUPERINTENDENT EVALUATION – Twice a year the Corvallis School Board evaluates my progress as superintendent. Tonight’s evaluation went for 90 minutes and was a productive closed session that gave me guidance in moving our district forward.  


A blog is different from an article. In a blog I am able to talk about my personal experience on the topic I am writing about, which is my Corvallis Experience.  I want to commend the district leaders and business office staff for continuing to lead and learn in my absent. My dad was admitted into the hospital Monday night and I was able to go support him until his release Thursday afternoon.  Again, I want to personally thank Dan Carrasco, superintendent designee, in my absent, and the fabulous cabinet team of leaders!


MET WITH MAINTENANCE DIRECTOR – Met with Jim Bowen on current and ongoing projects. Heating issues were solved over the past three days.

MET WITH BUSINESS SERVICES STAFF – Met with Business Service team on several issues from insurance, past practices in hiring, to purchase order approvals.

MET WITH BUILDING PRINCIPALS – Met with the three building principals on professional development, staffing, and other budgetary concerns.  

MET WITH CONSULTANT – Met with a consultant on professional development and training for teacher evaluation and feedback.

MET WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL – Met with Richie Borden on a student situation and other staffing issues.

MET WITH BOARD MEMBER – Met with a board member to discuss ongoing discussions on supporting teachers and students.

MET WITH SPECIAL SERVICES DIRECTOR – Met with Dan Carrasco on a staffing situation to fill a need. Researched and garnered legal advice.

MET WITH DISTRICT RECEPTIONIST – Met with Heather Smart on district correspondence, mailings, and other communication.  


Total Active Cases as of Today: 19 ( PS= 9, MS= 1, HS= 9, OTHER = 0) -- Total Active Cases Last Friday: 7

Total in Quarantine as of Today: 48 -- Total in Quarantine Last Friday: 8

Our next regularly scheduled school board meeting will be on Tuesday, February 15th. We will start with a special session at 6:00 PM, and the regular board meeting starts at 7:00 PM in the library.
