Superintendent's Blue Devil Blog: 11/19/21

Hello, Blue Devils! I am trying something new this year on Fridays. I will be giving you some insight into the Superintendent's job, my personal Blue Devil experience, and end with a Covid-19 update.

Monday 11/15 

 MAINTENANCE MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen on maintenance issues, projects, and ongoing support.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL MEETING – Met with middle school principal on coaching opportunities with employees.

BUSINESS MANAGER MEETING – Met with Business Manager to review school board processes and more. MEET WITH EDUCATION CONSULTANT – Met with an education consultant that supports Corvallis Schools. Discussed many ongoing projects in our schools: social media, fundraising, and supporting staff.

MET WITH CSCT CANDIDATE – Met with a potential candidate for hire through Aware, Inc. This company has openings for our Comprehensive School and Community Treatment program (CSCT). CSCT supports the mental health of our students in our schools. The company contracts with the District and we provide space for their services. This is a much needed service as we have been without CSCT for two years.

INFORMATIONAL TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR MEETING – Met with informational technology director, Josh Fawcett, to review several ongoing projects. CURRICULUM DIRECTOR MEETING – Met with curriculum director on ongoing projects and training for administration and teachers.

SCHOOL BOARD NEGOTIATIONS MEETING – The school board had a work session to revise and review a recent Memorandum of Understanding being negotiated with the Corvallis Faculty Group. 

 Tuesday 11/16 

 MAINTENANCE MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen on maintenance issues, projects, and ongoing support.

DISTRICT INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES MEETING – K-12 Administrators and the Director of Business Services meets bi-weekly to review district wide processes and procedures. The topics covered this week included: upcoming secretaries meeting, state of the district address by superintendent, Human Resources processes, social media, district wide safety procedures, CSCT update, and more.  

ACCREDITATION MEETING WITH NORTH DAKOTA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND OTHER ADMINISTRATORS – Working on proposing ideas to the Office of Public Instruction while Chapter 55, Accreditation, is open for review with a task force team. I am working with administrators from Kalispell and Billings on proposing change.

MEETING WITH A LOCAL BUSINESS AND A BOARD CHAIRMAN – Met with local business owners on a continued partnership on several projects.

WORKING WITH LEGAL – Routinely we work with lawyers who give us advice on policy, procedures, and other situations. BUSINESS MANAGER MEETING – Met with Business Manager to review school board sub finance committee meeting for Thursday. 

Wednesday 11/17 

 MAINTENANCE MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen on maintenance issues, projects, and ongoing support.

LEAD POSITIVE CONFERENCE – Participated in a free conference put on by inspirational speaker on motivation and positivity, Jon Gordon. He leads conferences and seminars around the world for Fortune 500 businesses, school districts, hospitals, and nonprofits (He has 25 different books published: Energy Bus, The Power of Positive Leadership, The Coffee Bean, and more). I viewed this online conference when I wasn’t in other meetings today. I try not to miss this annual event.

BITTERROOT COLLEGE ADVISORY MEETING – Met with Bitterroot College Advisory team. Most of the discussion was based around the transition in becoming an independent community college, free from University of Montana. In 18 months, it should be fully transitioned. I was asked to be on a newly formed Foundation.

CURRICULUM DIRECTOR MEETING – Met with curriculum director to review upcoming professional development for the District Leadership Team and the Administrators.

SPECIAL SERVICES DIRECTOR --  Met with the special services director on several topics and ongoing projects.

BUSINESS MANAGER MEETING – Met with Business Manager to review several processes, as well as funds for ESSER and more.

Thursday 11/18 

 CORVALLIS SCHOOL FOUNDATION MEETING – Met with the Foundation Director on a fundraising opportunity and upcoming grant proposals.

DISTRICT SAFETY MEETING – Reviewed the last full day PIR, Nov. 5. Each school practiced the reunification process in preparation for the evacuation of a school during an emergency. We problem solved several situations, revised procedures, and assigned duties.    ELEOTS 

OBSERVATIONS AT MIDDLE SCHOOL - Through the accreditation company called Cognia, all administrators have been certified and trained to complete ELEOT (Effective Learning Environments Observation Tool) observations. This data is used for system-wide change. The data is not focused on any one teacher, but all teachers as a whole. We then build district-wide goals off of this data and compare it to nationwide data from over 42,000 observations. All administrators will take part in this process and all classrooms are observed.

BUSINESS MANAGER MEETING – Met with Business Manager to review the agenda for the upcoming school board meeting with Finance Committee.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING SUB COMMITTEE: FINANCE – Met with school board subcommittee on finance. We worked on budget philosophy and communication tools for the board and the public. A monthly and annual budget communication tool, the budget process timeline, and well as diving into the edits for the annual District Budget Information booklet that will be released in December.   

Friday 11/19 

MAINTENANCE MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen on maintenance issues, projects, and ongoing support.

BUSINESS MANAGER MEETING – Met with Business Manager to funds spent towards a specific professional development initiative, Daily 5 Reading Structure at the Primary and some Middle School grades, over the past two years.

SPECIAL SERVICES DIRECTOR --  Met with the special services director on several topics and ongoing projects from CSCT hiring, hiring SPED para’s, and more.  

CURRICULUM DIRECTOR MEETING – Met with curriculum director to review several topics from Daily 5, ELEOTS scoring for Cognia, and other professional development opportunities.

BOARD OF PUBLIC EDUCATION MEETING AT U OF MONTANA – Governor Gianforte spoke on his vision for education in Montana. Elsie Artnzen, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, also spoke on revisions to certification and the state of education in Montana. Other educational leaders also spoke.

COGNIA MEETING – Met with the state coordinator for Cognia, Daniel Sybrant, to review upcoming plans for Corvallis School District.

COVID UPDATE: 11/19/21 

 Total Active Cases as of Today: 4 ( PS= 1, MS= 0, HS= 3, OTHER = 0) -- Total Active Cases Last Friday: 4 Total in Quarantine as of Today: 9 -- Total in Quarantine Last Friday: 10 

Our next regularly scheduled school board meeting will be on December 14th. We will start with a special session at 6:00 PM, and the regular board meeting starts at 7:00 PM in the library.  I have an open-door policy, please come visit me at the Central Office.
