Superintendent's Blue Devil Blog: 11/05/21 

 Hello, Blue Devils! I am trying something new this year on Fridays. I will be giving you some insight into the Superintendent's job, my personal Blue Devil experience, and end with a Covid-19 update.

Monday 11/01

EVALUATION - The first of three evaluation conversations with one of the administrators. We worked on the evaluation process of staff, walk through expectations, and observed several classrooms.

MAINTENANCE MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen on maintenance issues, projects, and ongoing support.

TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR MEETING - Met again with the new transportation director on his ongoing projects, routes, and parent situations.

SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MEETING - Went through topics for the board agenda for 11/9.


Tuesday 11/02

MAINTENANCE MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen on maintenance issues, projects, and ongoing support.

ELEOT'S OBSERVATIONS - Through the accreditation company called Cognia, all administrators have been certified and trained to complete ELEOT (Effective Learning Environments Observation Tool) observations. This data is used for system-wide change. The data is not focused on any one teacher, but all teachers as a whole. We then build district-wide goals off of this data and compare it to nationwide data from over 42,000 observations. All administrators will take part in this process and all classrooms are observed.

CENTRAL OFFICE WORKING LUNCH - Met with all Central Office staff over lunch with our two new directors: Chris Mayer, Transportation Director, and Jolene Tollenaar, Business Services Director.

TOUR MIDDLE SCHOOL WITH JOLENE TOLLENAAR - Jolene, Business Services Director, and I toured the middle school, met administration, secretaries and walked the hallways.

DISTRICT INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES TEAM MEETING - Meet with K-12 administrators on processes that affect our school district-wide. Today's topics included Human Resources Documents and Process Review, Cognia Parent Survey, Reunification Agenda for Friday's training, and more.

TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR MEETING - Met with the new transportation director on solving issues.


Wednesday 11/03

TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR MEETING - Met again with the new transportation director on solving issues.

WESTERN MONTANA ASSOCIATION SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENTS - Met in Missoula with over 20 western Montana School Superintendents on the latest issues, public school advocacy, mental health support, and more.

SAM LPLP Presenter - Met online with the School Administrators of Montana Leaders Professional Learning Program. I supported the presentation on mental health supports in schools.

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY MEETINGS - Met with Kristina Berger, Instructional Technology Director, and Allison Nys, Curriculum Director, on several topics dealing with Cognia ELEOT scoring, Cognia review process coming to Corvallis in the Fall of 2022, and other topics.


Thursday 11/04 - RENT A SUPERINTENDENT DAY

One day each semester, I allow all teachers to sign up for me to come to their classrooms for an hour. I had an amazing day with the kids. 

 8:00- 9:00 Kindergarten - Read a story and answered questions. 

 9:00-10:00 First Grade - Supported students with Read Naturally assessments and read a story to them. 

 10:00-11:00 High School Algebra - Played a dice game with students on graphing x and y slope, and connected to my vast roller coaster experiences. 

 11:00-12:00 Classroom Without Walls - Went to Teller Wildlife Refuge where I was able to work with students on getting macroinvertebrate samples from Woodside Creek and Gird Creek. 

 12:00-12:30 Lunch 

 12:30-1:30 Met with Middle School Principal and Curriculum Director on several topics. 

 1:30-2:30 Sixth Grade - Taught a math lesson with six graders. 

 2:30-3:00 First Grade - Met with another classroom to work on reading scripts for an upcoming Thanksgiving Play. 

 3:00-4:00 Met with the Business Services Director. 

 4:00-5:00 Worked on getting caught up from being gone.


Friday 11/05 - NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS

REUNIFICATION TRAINING - Started working with the safety team on setting up for the Reunification Training. This is practiced with all staff in order to reunite parents and students if we have to evacuate a school. We started with the High School, then Middle School, and ended training with all Primary staff.

CURRICULUM DIRECTOR MEETING - Went through several topics on Reunification, Cognia, and more.

SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MEETING - Discussed with a school board member on several topics.

NEW TEACHERS MENTORING MEETING - Blaire Anderson, Primary Assistant Principal, and Allison Nys, Curriculum Director, meet monthly with new teachers. I was able to attend today's session to discuss the great things going on in classrooms, building relationships, and worked on grading scenarios.

TEACHER MEETING - Met with a teacher about the vision for his department and the district going forward.

COVID UPDATE: 11/05/21 

 Total Active Cases as of Today: 6 ( PS= 2, MS= 3, HS= 1, OTHER = 0) -- Total Active Cases Last Friday: 14 Total in Quarantine as of Today: 14 -- Total in Quarantine Last Friday: 25

Our next regularly scheduled school board meeting will be on November 9th. We will start with a special session at 6:00 PM, and the regular board meeting starts at 7:00 PM in the library. I have an open-door policy, please come visit me at the Central Office.
