Superintendent's Blue Devil Blog: 10/22/21


Hello, Blue Devils! I am trying something new this year on Fridays. I will be giving you some insight into the Superintendent's job, my personal Blue Devil experience, and end with a Covid-19 update.

Monday 10/18

MAINTENANCE MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen on maintenance issues, projects, and ongoing support.

TRANSPORTATION MEETING - Met with a bus driver.

EVALUATION - The first of three evaluation conversations with one of the administrators. We worked on the evaluation process of staff, walk through expectations, and observed several classrooms.

SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MEETING - Met with a board member on several items.

BUSINESS DIRECTOR MEETING - Met with the new business manager and clerk on her contract, the vision going forward, and more. We will announce her name after the school board meeting approval on Monday, 10/25.

BOSS'S DAY LUNCHEON - What a fabulous Central Office staff. We all met for lunch in the Conference Room to celebrate. I am so lucky to be part of a great team! #WeAreCorvallis

ANOTHER EVALUATION - The second of three evaluation conversations with one of the administrators. We worked on the evaluation process of staff, walk through expectations, and observed several classrooms.

JV FOOTBALL VS. RONAN - Having been a past athletic director, I have let our administration team know that I will fill in a couple of nights for them to give them a night off. This night the Corvallis boys lost by only two points, but it was an exciting game with a chance to win down to the last play similar to the East Helena game last week.


Tuesday 10/19

MAINTENANCE MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen on maintenance issues, projects, and ongoing support.

FINGERPRINTING - Fingerprinted a volunteer that will support the Primary School.

TRANSPORTATION MEETING - Met with Katie Gividen and Jim Bowen on transportation scheduling and mechanical issues.

SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MEETING - Met a school board member on several topics.

SPECIAL SERVICES MEETING - Each month the special services director, Dan Carrasco, meets with the special education department. I sat in on this meeting and learned more about our intervention programs, upcoming OPI review, and how we support our students.

TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR MEETING - Met with the new transportation director on his contract, the vision going forward, and more. We will announce his name after the school board meeting approval on Monday, 10/25.


Wednesday 10/20

BUSINESS DEPARTMENT MEETING - Met with Todd Watkins, financial consultant, on supporting us through the transition of hiring of a new business manager/clerk. Discussed monthly budget communication for school board and community, as well as reports for yearly budget projections.

DISTRICT INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES MEETING - Met with K-12 administrators on practices and protocols that affect all schools. Discussions were focused on hiring practices, onboarding of new employees, upcoming COGNIA review, upcoming secretaries meeting, Distance Learning Academy, and other HR issues.

BITTERROOT COLLEGE ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING - Traveled to Hamilton for the Bitterroot College Advisory Council meeting. The Bitterroot College is working on transitioning to be independent of the University of Montana. Also, continued discussion on connections to local school districts through dual credit offerings as well as workforce training opportunities for high school students.

TRANSPORTATION MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen, supporting transportation department, on some bus mechanical and maintenance issues.

BOARD MEMBER MEETING - I met with a board member in getting ready for the special board meeting tomorrow.


Thursday 10/21

MCEL VIRTUAL CONFERENCE - Participated in the Montana Conference of Educational Leaders today. Over 200 educational leaders, including school board members, are participating in this virtual conference. I participated in the following sessions: Opening Session from MTPEC Leaders, SAM Leaders Professional Learning Program, and ESSER Funding Q & A.

FINGERPRINTING - Fingerprinted two volunteers today who will be supporting at the Primary School.

BUSINESS DEPARTMENT MEETINGS - Met with Lyndi and Heather today on business department questions and possible new personnel.

TRANSPORATION MEETING - Met with one of our contractors on leasing a bus and supporting him.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING: CFG MOU - Met school board members for a work session on a proposed Memorandum of Understanding from the Corvallis Faculty Group pertaining to work place conditions.


Friday 10/22

MCEL VIRTUAL CONFERENCE - Participated in the Montana Conference of Educational Leaders today. Over 200 educational leaders, including school board members, are participating in this virtual conference. I participated in the following sessions: SAM Membership Meeting, Clerk and Superintendent Duty List, OPI's Social and Emotional Learning in Montana Schools, MTSBA's Open Meeting Laws, and Transfers Between Funds.

BUSINESS DEPARTMENT MEETINGS - Met with Lyndi and Heather today on business department questions and possible new personnel.

MAINTENANCE MEETING - Met with Jim Bowen on maintenance issues, projects, and ongoing support.

SENIOR NIGHT AT THE FOOTBALL GAME - In supporting our administration who cover games, I thrown myself into the rotation. I love sports and what they offer for students. Tonight we celebrate our seniors in all fall sports! Great night for a fantastic game even though it didn't end in our favor with score and a downpouring of rain.

COVID UPDATE: 10/22/21

Total Active Cases as of Today: 20 ( PS= 4, MS= 11, HS=5, OTHER = 0) -- Total Active Cases Last Friday: 17

Total in Quarantine as of Today: 34 -- Total in Quarantine Last Friday: 30

Our next regularly scheduled school board meeting will be on November 9th. We will start with a special session at 6:00 PM, and the regular board meeting starting at 7:00 PM in the library.
